Runtime Errors Troubleshooting and Repair

What are Rundll Errors?

Rundll errors occur when a program being used on a computer using a Windows-based operating system cannot access the specific DLL file that it needs in order to run. DLL files are small pieces of data or files that the operating system uses to function and run programs. In general, DLL files can be used for a variety of different programs that “borrow” the files. If the DLL file is not immediately accessible to a program that is attempting to use it, an error referred to as a rundll error occurs. Windows tries to use the file, but is unable to locate it. If the DLL file that is missing is important enough, its absence can lead to a system crash.

Reasons behind Rundll Errors

This type of situation can occur for several different reasons including drive errors, faulty installation of a program, the presence of spyware, a virus infection, incomplete uninstalls of an application, and faulty software. Whatever the reason behind the rundll error, the program that is trying to run cannot do so and will not complete its task because it does not have access to all of the proper files. Part of the problem is that DLL files are shared by any number of programs and so, when an error occurs with one program due to a missing DLL file, it will most likely occur when another program tries to access the same DLL file leading to a rundll error.

Common Fixes for Solving Rundll Errors

In some cases, a virus or some type of spyware might be involved. Since DLL files are shared, malware often attempts to hijack the file making it impossible for legitimate programs to access it. Viruses can alter the structure of a DLL file, making it impossible to function with its original purpose, or they can simply make it impossible for the operating system to locate specific DLL files. In fact, some forms of malware even insert fake DLL files that create confusion within the system. If the rundll errors have been caused by a malware infection, then a full scan of the computer with anti-virus/anti-spyware software is needed. Most likely, the malware infection has caused some damage to the operating system, leading to the error messages. Completing a repair of the operating system as well as the scan should correct the situation.

Run a registry cleaner in order to fix rundll errors. In general, running a registry cleaner will correct errors as well as help to speed up the processing of your computer. The registry cleaner is designed to repair broken files and to place missing ones back in their proper location. This should take place after you have scanned the computer for viruses.

Reboot the computer.

In some cases, it will load all of the files properly once you do.

Some rundll errors can be solved by completing a full repair installation of the existing operating system along with the reinstallation of any available updates.
